Pandemic closures not only led to total revenue loss and mounting debt but also reshaped the film industry with new streaming options and shorter theatrical exclusivity windows. This, compounded by recent Hollywood labor disruptions, has delayed the recovery of cinemas, leading to closures across North America and beyond.

Yet, as the founder and CEO of Film.Ca Cinemas, I remain optimistic about our future. History backs this optimism! Over the past century, the cinema industry has weathered countless storms—from the Great Depression to the rise of TV, Betamax, VHS, DVDs, and now, streaming. Each time, cinemas faced periods of adjustment but ultimately survived and thrived. Today’s challenges are just another chapter in this resilient story, and we are already seeing signs of recovery.

That said, like many independent cinemas, we are facing immediate cash flow challenges as we head into the traditionally slow fall season. But at Film.Ca, we’re not sitting back. We’ve launched several exciting initiatives to diversify our revenue streams. For example, our Digital Works service, which converts film, video, and slides, has been a hit since its launch last fall. And our kids' summer camp has evolved into a year-round Film.Ca Academy, offering programs that have been enthusiastically received by the community.

As a community theatre, we’ve reached out for support twice before—once in 2013 when the digital conversion crisis threatened us, and again during the pandemic.
